Shoals of armored catfish near Puerto Inirida

Our boats didn’t actually need to go that far. There were beautiful biotopes full of cardinal tetras, cichlids, catfish species and even altums all around the village of Inirida. Some of the waters were picturesquely situated in the forest and had very clear blackwater.

We found armored catfish (Corydoras brevirostris) only in the Cano Bonito. If you consider your five armored catfish in your aquarium a nice shoal, you should see the shoals of armored catfish in the Cano Bonito! They are hard to count because they don’t lie down next to each other on the ground, but, if a shoal of armored catfish takes several minutes to pass you, there must be several hundred of them, at a rough estimate! Sights like this are really something.

You have never seen so many armored catfish!

Almost everyone knows that armored catfish are schooling fish. But how many armored catfish do you need for a shoal? In the Cano Bonito near Puerto Inirida in Colombia, there are so many armored catfish you can hardly count them. Once you’ve seen the masses of armored catfish swimming through the picture, you’ll think twice about only keeping five in your aquarium.

We found the cardinal tetras exclusively here in very shallow water (depths of between 5 and 40 cm). They NEVER sought out deeper areas. They always swam above areas where the ground was completely covered with foliage.
