By making comparisons with the human diet we can learn why the right nutrition is essential for fish wellbeing. The biggest problem is the wrong composition. Fish which mainly feed on plants need food which mainly consists of plant components (e.g. JBL NovoVert). Fish (like most cichlids) which prefer a predatory diet likewise need food which is composed of fish meat and crustaceans. If you own a community aquarium with plant eaters and predators, it is important to create a varied diet to take both feeding types into account. The wrong diet weakens the immune system of the fish and increases their susceptibility to pathogenic germs.

Another big problem is when the food is far over its expiry date, resulting in a vitamin deficiency. After opening of the food container for the first time the food needs to be used up within three months because the vitamin content decreases rapidly afterwards. Please take this into account when purchasing the food. It’s better to buy smaller containers than too large ones, which do not get used up after three months. Always close the food container properly after use so that neither air nor light can reach the food. Transparent containers are completely unsuitable for food. Most vitamins are destroyed by the high UV of the light. The vitamin supply is the most important factor in resistance to disease!

Not only humans like variety! Also fish feel visibly better and their organism becomes less susceptible to disease when not always fed with the same food. Never give your fish the same food mornings and evenings. JBL has many “treats” for fish (e.g. JBL PlanktonPur, JBL NovoFil), which are as greatly appreciated by fish as with humans and their favourite dessert. That way you keep up variety and the animals are ill less often.

The last point with regard to resistance is about frozen food. Frozen food is an excellent food supplement which can’t transmit diseases. Only if the cold chain has been interrupted, will there be an explosive reproduction of bacteria in the food, which has a negative impact. However frozen food contains practically no vitamins. We strongly recommend you add vitamins (twice a week) with JBL Atvitol.
