  • My filter has a loss in output. What can be the cause ?

The following are the main causes of a loss in output of external filters such as JBL CristalProfi e700, e900 and e1500: _x000D_ _x000D_ a) Soiling and a slower flow rate through the filter media as a result and _x000D_ _x000D_ b) So-called biofilms are deposited in the hoses. The latter, in particular, is associated with a significant loss in output.

  • Does the filter restart on its own after a power shut off?

The filter (CristalProfi) starts up again on its own after a power shut off, but only if there is water in the filter circuit.

  • The start button of the CristalProfi external filter is stuck and does not return to the original position after is is pressed.

The most likely cause of this is the start button being pushed at a slight angle. _x000D_ _x000D_ Solution: Please unscrew the 4 screws at the corners which secure the lateral handles. After the handles are lifted, you will see 4 more screws which secure the pump head cover. Unscrew these screws. Now you can lift the pump head cover. _x000D_ _x000D_ This start button is screwed onto a connecting piece. Please turn the button to loosen it. The tension on the spring of the start button usually releases itself after the first rotation. _x000D_ _x000D_ Replace the pump head cover and the handles in reverse order.

  • Can the impellers of the JBL CristalProfi e700, e900 or e1500 filters be used in the JBL CristalProfi e701/2, e901/2 or e1501/2 greenline filters?

The impellers of the JBL CristalProfi e700, e900 or e1500 filters don’t fit into the impeller housings of the JBL CristalProfi e701/2, e901/2 or e1501/2 filters. _x000D_ _x000D_ Please make sure that you use the appropriate original impellers only. No warranty applies can be granted if other combinations are used.

  • My external filter was loud or gurgled after it was installed.

After a new installation, the remaining air escapes from the filter media during the first 5-7 days. This causes “gurgling” or intermittent rattling. Additional problems may occur due to transmission of resonance. Please make sure that the filter has 4 rubber feet on the bottom and only has contact with the cabinet there and nowhere else. Test by placing the filter on a soft surface, making sure that the hoses don’t have any contact with the stand either. If you notice air in the filter, please check the hose on the inlet side for air pockets and streams of bubbles. This would give an indication of the source of the trapped air.

  • My external filter makes loud, gurgling noises.

This is most likely due to a small bubble appearing periodically in the pump head of the CristalProfi which is then transported out of the filter. _x000D_ _x000D_ If air enters the filter system, this may be an indication that a seal is no longer tight or that connecting pieces don’t close tightly. As there is constant slight low pressure during operation, this is not necessarily noticeable. In the event that there is a leak of this kind, you can test by switching off the filter temporarily, in which case a small amount of water would escape where the leak is. Please note: This test should only be carried out with careful monitoring. _x000D_ Be sure to check the hoses on the inlet side for air pockets or fine streams of bubbles. Often this is merely because the hose no longer fits securely into the JBL InSet. _x000D_ _x000D_ Another possibility: The filter material may be very heavily soiled, which can result in the formation of fermentation gas which is periodically pressed out of the filter. _x000D_ _x000D_ Please restart the filter as follows: _x000D_ _x000D_ Remove the water from the body of the filter and the hoses. Make sure that the two small stopcock levers on the pump head are in the “OPEN” position. During the following start up procedure, the water outlet pipe with the spray bar, etc. must be positioned ABOVE the surface of the water for optimal ventilation of the appliance. Press the “START” button on the pump head repeatedly with the palm of your hand until water begins to flow into the suction hose (hose on “IN”). Wait until the filter has filled completely with water and the water in the hose leading to the water outlet pipe (hose on “OUT”) is at the same level as the surface of the water in the aquarium. Connect the filter to the mains power supply. The water will now flow out of the water outlet pipe and into the aquarium. At first, it may be mixed with air that is still trapped between the layers of the filter media. Gently shake the filter to dislodge the air which will escape with the stream of water.

  • The filter no long sucks in water.

Please clean all the hoses, pipes and the filter to remove any biofilms, algae and mud in them. It is not enough to simply rinse with tap water. Make sure to use the JBL Cleany hose brush for cleaning. Remove the water from the body of the filter and the hoses. • Is it all right to turn the filter off briefly by closing the stopcocks ?

No: The two adjusting cocks should not be used to turn off the filter briefly, because the engine is still running and the impeller still rotating, so that when the flow is cut off, the entire load is placed on the impeller. Besides this, cooling of the pump head is no longer ensured.

  • My filter won’t start back up again. What should I do ?

Please check the following: remove the pump head from the filter casing, remove the impeller cover and check whether the impeller is stuck. Remove the impeller and clean it and the impeller shaft. Afterwards reinstall the parts. Then shortly insert the plug into the socket. The impeller will run again and the magnetic force should be noticeable.

  • Are the CristalProfis of the e series also suited for saltwater/brackish water tanks?

Yes, they can be connected to a saltwater/brackish water tank without hesitation.

  • Can the output of an external filter decrease?

The motors in the pump heads of the JBL CristalProfi external filters are so-called synchronous motors, this means they rotate with a fixed speed that is dependent on the mains frequency, e.g. 3,000 rpm at 50 hertz. _x000D_ _x000D_ Accordingly, an external filter can’t lose output. If the flow rate decreases, this is either due to soiled filter media or the formation of so-called biofilms, particularly in the hoses. _x000D_ _x000D_ Please clean the hoses regularly with a hose brush to remove the biofilms. Flushing with warm water is not enough. At the beginning the cleaning interval may be increased.

  • Can I add the carbon dioxide (CO2) to the suction nozzle of the external filter?

It is not advisable to add the carbon dioxide (CO2) to the tank water via the suction side of an external filter such as the JBL CristalProfi. This is better done via the discharge side with an inline diffuser, such as the JBL ProFlora direct. _x000D_ _x000D_ The following disadvantages arise when adding CO2 via the suction side: _x000D_ 1) There is always a slight vacuum when the filter is running, so that outgassing of the CO2 may occur. _x000D_ _x000D_ 2) The undissolved gas bubbles collect in the impeller housing, which may lead to running noise. _x000D_ _x000D_ 3) There is also a risk of the water flow stalling in the impeller housing, which may cause a loss of function in the filter. _x000D_ _x000D_ 4) The start button is impaired when the filter is put into operation.

  • Why do the locking clips have a structured texture?

A further enhancement of the locking clips has ensured even more stability. The locking clips of the CristalProfi external filters are made of glass fibre reinforced plastic to ensure higher stability. This is easily discernible by its slightly fibrous texture.

  • On the new filter the start button is blocked - what shall I do?

There is a resistance the first time you press the start button because it needs to be activated. Take both hands, lean over the filter and press the button with force. A clicking activates it and indicates the correct procedure. Now the start button can easily be pressed with one hand.

  • Wear on the impeller - When should I replace it?

There is no general answer to this question. As with a car tyre, the duration and intensity of use is decisive. Many customers use the impellers for several years without any noticeable change. Heavy use of the impeller results in a shorter service life. With a car, you know the wear and tear caused by heavy braking, mechanical damage and many kilometres driven. _x000D_ _x000D_ The following factors apply to an impeller: _x000D_ _x000D_ 1. Running time in hours _x000D_ 2. Throttling of the flow rate (max. 50 %) and thus lower cooling capacity _x000D_ 3. Dry running during water change (see 2.) _x000D_ 4. Mechanical damage (e.g. by snails, improper installation after removal, ...) _x000D_ 5. Heavy soiling _x000D_ _x000D_ As it is a wearing part, the impeller is not covered by the warranty. For a long service life, you need to clean it regularly. This will prevent increased running noises. The impeller housing, the impeller and the shaft can be cleaned with a suitable cleaning brush. _x000D_ _x000D_ If it is necessary to replace the impeller due to wear, always replace the complete set, impeller with shaft and 2 rubber bearings. This is the only way to ensure proper functioning and smooth running. When removing the impeller and shaft, a rubber bearing often gets stuck at the bottom of the impeller housing and is very difficult to remove. JBL has developed its own special tool for this purpose, which is available from pet shops under the name "Pulling aid for impeller bearing". A useful cleaning brush for the impeller housing is also included in the tool.

  • The filter / pump hums during operation

It’s to investigate the cause of this. With pumps and filters positioned inside, you do not need to do anything other than hold the unit freely in the water, keeping it out of contact from any other objects. It is important that the unit remains completely under water and is only touching your hand. If the running noise is now quiet, there is no sign of wear on the rotor, it is just resonance transmission to surrounding elements such as the cover, the base cabinet or anything adjacent to the aquarium. You can then decouple this by making small adjustments. _x000D_ _x000D_ For external filters, make sure that the filter has 4 rubber feet at the bottom (except for the model CPe1901/2 with castors) and that it is only touching the cabinet there. To test the filter, place it next to or in front of the aquarium on a soft surface (e.g. a thick towel) and make sure that the hoses are not in contact with the cabinet. Many aquarium cabinets act like the sound box of a guitar with its sound hole. The smallest noise is amplified by the hollow body. Therefore, a soft underlay and, if necessary, lateral insulation are advantageous if the resonance is to be amplified. Tubes lying on top or in a very rigid installation with further attachments lead to the same effect. The test with the filter outside the cabinet, as described above, provides information about the actual operating noise. _x000D_ _x000D_ Strong running noises are caused by a worn impeller, a too strong load on the impeller due to a power reduction (dirt or throttling) and by a too small height difference between the water surface and the filter head, as described in the manual. Another possibility is that CO2 sucked in from the fertiliser system or air from the diaphragm pump, which are introduced near the filter, cause loud running noises.

  • Can the filter be placed next to the aquarium?

No, as a rule this is not possible. Otherwise air will be sucked in and the water will come to a standstill. The filter will not work properly. If it is installed next to the aquarium, there should be a distance of at least 20 cm between the water surface and the top edge of the filter. When placing the filter in the aquarium cabinet, the difference in height between the water surface and the filter bottom must not exceed 180 cm (max. 120 cm for e402).

  • My filter has become loud after a few months. What’s the reason for that?

The impeller of the filter is subject to constant wear and tear. We recommend you replace it. This way its smooth running is ensured. Make sure that the noises are not caused by trapped air. _x000D_ _x000D_ The guarantee covers defects in material and assembly. The guarantee does not cover parts subject to wear and tear, such as the impellers or shafts as well as damage caused by external influences and improper handling.

PUSH messages from JBL

What are PUSH messages? As part of the W3C standard, web notifications define an API for end-user notifications that are sent to the user's desktop and/or mobile devices via the browser. Notifications appear on the end devices as they are familiar to the end user from apps installed on the device (e.g. emails). Notifications appear on the end user’s device, just like an app (e.g. for emails) installed on the device.

A notification makes it possible to inform the user about an event outside the context of a website, such as a new blog post, a competition or a voucher.

These notifications enable a website operator to contact its users whenever they have a browser open - it doesn’t matter whether the user is currently visiting the website or not.

To be able to send web push notifications, all you need is a website with a web push code installed. This allows brands without apps to take advantage of many of the benefits of push notifications (personalised real-time communications at just the right moment).
