The answer to this question depends on the kind of tortoises, whether they are tropical rain forest species or European tortoises, which are quite common in terrariums. _x000D_ _x000D_ For European tortoises TerraCoco Humus is not suitable as the sole substrate. The animals come from Mediterranean areas with dry warm summers and shouldn’t be permanently kept on humid or semi-humid substrates. _x000D_ _x000D_ Assuming the tortoises are not kept in outdoor enclosures, the ideal substrate would be 3/4 of sand to 1/4 of a 50:50 mixture of sand and TerraCoco Humus. Afterwards use a sprayer to keep this quarter moist and you will soon see how juvenile tortoises in particular use this material actively to burrow at night and to regulate their body moisture._x000D_ _x000D_ Literature: Schardt, Michael (2007): Die Griechische Landschildkröte (Testudo hermanni boettgeri). – Münster 2007.
