The koi’s teeth

A very interesting subject, about which little is known, is the subject of the koi shedding their teeth. I am quite often asked at the facility why the koi “convulse” at the pond’s bottom. It has to be added that this is after they have stopped eating for the last 2-3 days. This phenomenon can often be observed in the spring. As a matter of fact the koi don’t shed their throat teeth at regular intervals, they just do it when required. When the old ones stop functioning perfectly, so to speak, then it’s time for new ones!

While their teeth are being replaced the koi prefer softened food from the bottom and some of them even “starve” for these 2-3 days.

You can clearly see the discarded teeth as small white dots at the bottom (on a dark bottom without gravel).

The koi have a row of throat teeth each in the upper and lower jaws, not directly in the mouth but in the throat. The koi use the throat teeth to grind their food but also to communicate. They grind their teeth to communicate with each other.

With best regards Mr. Koi
