Healthy aquarium/healthy pond with conditions close to nature
The right water values are dependent on the fish stock and the plants in the aquarium/pond. Even if the water looks clear it can be contaminated. With bad values diseases or algae can appear in the aquarium/pond. To maintain a healthy aquarium/pond with conditions close to nature it is important to check and adapt the water values regularly.

Why test?
The well-being of aquarium and pond dwellers and the growth of aquatic plants depend to a large extent on the O2 level being kept as constant as possible. Oxygen is the “elixir of life” for all animal organisms. All animals in the aquarium and pond need oxygen to breathe. But the “invisible helpers” in the aquarium and pond, the bacteria that break down pollutants, also depend on sufficient supplies of oxygen in order to be able to carry out their useful activities. In aquariums and ponds with little or no planting and in marine aquariums the oxygen content always needs to be kept at an adequate balance using technical equipment.
The water absorbs oxygen through the water surface. The more the surface is moving the more oxygen is absorbed. In case of dying algae and during the use of many medications the oxygen content in the water needs to be increased by aeration.

FAQ
Does the old O2 test work with the new refill sets?

You can relax. The new O2 test and the refills are just extensions of the old test. You can use the new refill for your old colour chart without any problems. Just use the first two reagents without the third one. You only need the new colour chart for the 3rd reagent. This one is possibly already part of the colour chart bundle and labelled accordingly. The 3rd reagent makes it easier to read off the values, but is still the same test, so there is no need to to change anything.

I have lost my colour chart. Can I download the colour chart for the test?

The colour cards are not available for download on the JBL website. For this a guaranteed true colour print is required, and you need a printer which can be re-calibrated before each printout. Most privately used printers are not accurate enough for this.

You will find the colour chart bundle as spare part on the respective product page and in the spare parts shop.

Which of the three scales on the colour cards symbolize of the water tests saltwater, freshwater and garden pond ?

koi carp = garden pond
angel fish = saltwater
discus = freshwater

Which scale applies for my aquarium? My test has two or three control fields with fish and recommendations.

We repeatedly receive questions regarding the symbols on the water test. The hobby areas cannot be clearly assigned to the scales for analysis. There are three symbols to make the hobby areas on the colour charts clear:

Discus = fresh water
Emperor = salt water
Koi = garden pond

In the following, you will find a list which assigns the scale for analysing the results from measurements in the hobby area and explains the symbols: The scales are described from the top to the bottom here.

NO3: salt water, fresh water, garden pond
pH 6.0 – 7.6: fresh water, garden ponds
pH 7.4 – 9.0: salt water, fresh water, garden pond
Fe: fresh water, garden pond

The following JBL tests have a uniform scale for all 2 or 3 hobby areas for analysis of the results from the measurements, as differentiation is no longer necessary:

SiO2
Cu
NH4
NO2
PO4
pH 3-10
O2

Is it possible that the JBL oxygen test O2 flocculates slightly after the addition of the 2nd reagent?

Yes, this is possible and normal (formation of manganese dioxide). Please shake the test vessel thoroughly before referring to the colour scale.

Testing Water in the Jungle

Our 15 expeditions have taught us something new: In natural waters nitrogens (ammonium/ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) and phosphates are ALWAYS scarce and below the limit of detection. Only when humans have an influence on the natural water, can nitrogens and phosphates be found.
