Through the Rapids to Isla Orchidea

We went further upstream the Rio Carrao by boat. At two rapids everyone had to leave to boat to get around the rapids on foot, while the skipper manoeuvred the boat up the rapids. Because of the low water level this was only possible with our helping hands to push and shove. Unfortunately the low water level also forced us to abandon our plan to go the whole way up to the Salto Angel waterfall. But Orchid Island, where we stayed one day instead, also proved to be a worthwhile destination. In the river we spotted sucker catfish, Crenuchidae and numerous cichlids. A highlight was a tributary which was only one metre deep but had relatively clear water to allow intensive fish observation. But neither in the main river nor in the tributary were there true aquatic plants to be found. All the plants we found made a nice contrast to the brown water, the stones and the wood, but they were just marsh plants which had been briefly submerged under water. It was interesting that we only found sucker catfish and Crenuchidae near the west embankment. The direct sunlight and the shadowing effect of the trees and mountains caused the algae and sponges, which provide fish with their nutritional basis, to only grow on the rocks that side.
