CRUSTARUS

Crustaceans are part of the natural diet of all aquatic and pond turtle species. The high calcium content promotes the development of the animals' shells in particular. For this reason, JBL PROTERRA CRUSTARUS has a crustacean content of 54 %.

MOLLUSCUS

Snails, clams and other molluscs are rich in vitamins and contain many valuable ingredients. JBL PROTERRA MOLLUSCUS contains 12 % molluscs, including whole snails.

PESCARUS

In the wild, fish are part of the diet of almost all aquatic turtle species. In addition to protein, they also provide a high proportion of important phosphorus and calcium. JBL PROTERRA PESCARUS takes this into account with a 75 % fish content.

GAMMARUS

Gammarus have a naturally high calcium content, which has a positive effect on the shell growth of water and pond turtles. JBL PROTERRA GAMMARUS is a purely natural food consisting of 100 % dried Gammarus crustaceans.

BABY

Young water turtles species need food that supports growth, shell development and the immune system. JBL PROTERRA BABY covers this with a special food mix consisting of 83 % dried crustaceans and small fish.

HERBIL

Dried herbs naturally have a high crude fibre content, which ensures healthy digestion. They are also rich in minerals and vitamins. As a result, PROTERRA HERBIL consists of 56 % of various herbs, which cover the fibre requirements of tortoises.

FLORSIL

Plant flowers not only have a high crude fibre content, but also contain a lot of dietary fibres and vitamins. It is not for nothing that they are often part of the tortoises' diet in the wild. PROTERRA FLORSIL takes this into account with a flower content of 56 %.

VEGABIL

Due to their ideal mineral content, which supports health and shell formation, vegetables are an important component in the diet of tortoises. PROTERRA VEGABIL has a vegetable content of 54 %, which is an ideal supplement to the plant-based diet.

FRUCTIL

Varied diet. Abwechslungsreich und ausgewogen.

Water turtles eat pretty much everything in their habitat. The natural food spectrum is therefore very diverse. Ideally, the four foods should be fed alternately and supplemented with fresh aquatic plants and live food or even defrosted shrimps or fish morsels. The higher the water temperature, the more plants get eaten! So if you want to limit plant eating somewhat, you should keep the water temperature at around 24-25 °C. Y

The diet for desert tortoises and Mediterranean species is identical. Dietary fibre is very important as it binds water in the intestine and increases the length of time it remains in the intestine. In principle, tortoises do not touch anything that would be poisonous to them. Some plants and fruits, such as strawberries, are okay if they are fed in moderation. JBL foods always contain a healthy amount of fruit. The main part of the food should consist of herbs (e.g. JBL PROTERRA HERBIL), as the phosphorus/calcium ratio here is a healthy 1:4. Fruit, flowers, etc. are always a welcome addition to the "main" herb food. Forest tortoise species may be given more fruit than desert and steppe tortoises. Dried food such as the four JBL foods can be soaked in water for a little while, as they then develop a stronger flavour and tortoises perceive it much better as food.

Die optimale Zusammensetzung für ein bestimmtes Futter wird durch Spezialisten der jeweiligen Schildkrötenarten, der Literatur und Erfahrungen aus der JBL Forschungsabteilung sowie Beobachtungen auf JBL Expeditionen ermittelt. Nach diesem Rezept werden die Zutaten zu einem „Futterbrei“ zusammengemischt und der Herstellungsstraße für Flocken oder Extrudate (Granulat, Wafer, Sticks) zugeführt.

JBL expeditions often visit turtle habitats, be it in the deserts or, even more frequently, in the wetlands of the tropics. Analysing the respective habitat of the animals is one of the most exciting activities of all. Where exactly do the animals live? What are the local soil conditions? What are the abiotic factors such as humidity, temperature and light? All such observations of the way of life, but also of the feeding habits, flow directly into the development of the JBL foods. This information directly from the wild is extremely valuable, as it is otherwise hardly available.
