According to technical specifications, our heaters have a control accuracy of +/- 0.5 °C. Taking into account measurement errors in temperature measurement in aquarium operation, the switching accuracy should be around 1 to max. 1.5 °C. If a heater has deviations of 5-7 °C, this can usually only have the following cause. The heater is not adjusted correctly. To determine this, you need to know whether the heater has a push button for readjustment or not (JBL has several series). Otherwise, it is defective. The heater is located in an area of the aquarium with insufficient water flow.
It is absolutely correct that the JBL ProTemp S heater only emits a pleasant warmth to the hand when submerged in water. The surrounding water dissipates the heat very quickly and transfers it to the water. The heating element is therefore working correctly. If it is removed from the water, the glass would immediately become very hot. The safety shut-off kicks in immediately. However, the heat generated must escape outside the water before the shut-off is activated, which can cause deformation of the protective cage as there is no water to cool it. The safety thermostat on JBL ProTemp S heaters is not an automatic device that eliminates the need to unplug the heater when changing the water, but merely an additional safety precaution against accidents involving electricity. Due to its design, the heater can become very hot before the safety switch is activated.
After a new installation, the bubbles will only flow slowly through the reactor and will partially combine to form large bubbles. The device requires a running-in period of approx. 48 hours! Only then will a biofilm have formed on the surface of the device, allowing the bubbles to pass through to the top without any problems. After the running-in period, set the bubble rate required for your aquarium.
The protective baskets serve to protect ornamental fish from burns on the surface of the heating element. When a heater is in operation, it releases heat into the surrounding water. In hard water, scale (calcium carbonate deposits) can form at the contact surface between the glass and the water, which reduces heat dissipation. Excessive scale formation can cause heat accumulation, which leads to overheating and deformation of the protective baskets. If the water is hard, regular descaling of the heating rods is recommended, for example with JBL Clean A or JBL pH Minus.

The protective baskets are available as individual parts. To completely replace the basket, e.g. for the ProTemp S 200 W, you will need: 1 x 6043100 - End piece 1 x 6043200 - Middle short part 1 x 6043300 - Middle long part with one suction cup 1 x 6043400 - Upper part with 2 suction cups All of our dealers should be able to order the replacement parts if they do not have them in stock
Please clean the glass thoroughly before installing the thermometer. Algae, biofilms, and limescale can prevent it from sticking properly. If the thermometer still does not stick, there may be a problem with the suction cup itself. Due to a material defect, some suction cups have bubble-like growths that prevent them from sticking properly. If you have one of these suction cups, please contact our customer service with a photo.
