It is indeed the case that silicone does not bond properly to silicone, as it is not possible to form bridges over hardened silicone. If you want to reseal a seam, we therefore recommend applying Aquasil to the old silicone seam over a larger area so that there is sufficient contact with the glass.
When decorative materials are bonded over the entire surface with AquaSil silicone, curing takes significantly longer because the outer contact surface with the environment is much smaller in relation to the area than with a drawn silicone bead. As you correctly noted, the vinegar smell is an indication that the silicone has not yet fully cured.
The bond will remain intact as long as the best-before date has not expired. In such cases, it is helpful to clean the areas to be bonded beforehand, for example with acetone.
The acetic acid released reacts with water to form acetates, which do not cause any problems for animals. However, they are broken down by bacteria in the water as an organic source, which can lead to slight bacterial blooms and a associated reduction in oxygen content. However, the decisive factor here is the ratio between the acetates released and the volume of water. In a NanoCube, I would therefore be a little more cautious with the stocking at the beginning. You can prevent this effect by changing 50% of the water every day for a period of about one week. This will ensure sufficient dilution.
We recommend processing at room temperature. The possible processing range is between +5 °C and +40 °C. Processing below +5 °C is not possible.
