To ensure that the PVC hoses used are flexible and easy to attach to the connectors, they contain a small amount of plasticizers. These plasticizers cause bacteria to settle in biofilms on the inside of the hoses. Depending on their thickness, these biofilms can reduce performance. Over time, the plasticizers break down, the hoses become harder and less flexible, which reduces the formation of biofilms. Cleaning intervals of approximately 6 weeks at the beginning when using new hoses are not unusual. This applies regardless of the hoses used. On the contrary, highly flexible hoses, such as those available in pet stores, may require significantly shorter cleaning intervals over a longer period of time. After a period of use of about 3-5 months, the problem will be significantly reduced, but this will be at the expense of the flexibility of the hoses, which cannot be avoided for technical reasons. The operating instructions state on page 8 under point 9: "The hoses become covered with bacteria, which can significantly impede the flow of water due to their slime formation. Algae growth only occurs in strong light. Therefore, clean the hoses regularly with a cleaning brush (e.g., JBL Cleany). Simply rinsing with tap water is not sufficient." Page 6 of the operating instructions also states: "Cut the hoses as short as possible to avoid kinks."
