How often should the filter sponges be washed out?
The sponges in your internal and external filters are available with fine and coarse pore sizes. They mechanically retain particles such as food residues, excrement, but also leaves and algae. The bacteria that settle there break down the retained material. After a while, the filter's performance will therefore decline. You can wash the sponges from your JBL CRISTALPROFI filter up to twice under lukewarm water (25°C) without any problems. Please do not wash them too thoroughly, as this will kill the important cleaning bacteria and cause them to be lost. The sponges should be replaced after approx. 2 months. When washing them out, you will find areas that you cannot clean of dirt. This indicates that they need to be replaced.

How can I prevent shrimp from being sucked into my external filter?
To prevent shrimp from being sucked into your external filter, such as the JBL CRISTALPROFI e greenline models, and to secure the intake basket, you can simply slide the ProFlow sf quick filter cartridge over the intake basket of your JBL InSet. This prevents even baby shrimp from being sucked in. Please note that the sponge can quickly become clogged when heavily soiled and must therefore be cleaned several times a week. Otherwise, the performance of your external filter will be significantly reduced.
