There is no need to worry. The exchange of gases at the water surface with the air we breathe, which also contains CO2, is very important for the aquarium environment. The air stone should therefore agitate the water surface to promote gas exchange and prevent a film from forming. Most of the CO2 is already dissolved in the water column as it comes from the external filter. The membrane of the JBL PROFLORA Direct atomizes the CO2 into fine bubbles that are carried along with the flow and dissolve in the tube. Unlike reactors, the bubbles here are very fine and light. The undissolved portion then swirls around as it enters the aquarium and dissolves further. It is normal and unavoidable that a certain amount "pops out" at the surface. Nevertheless, this method is very effective.
If the bubble counter does not contain any water after installation, simply wait a few hours without switching on the CO2. It will fill itself through the water jet from the filter. Alternatively, the chamber of the bubble counter can be filled with water during installation.
In order to achieve a uniform bubble pattern with fine microbubbles, the modern ceramic-PE hybrid membrane should be watered before commissioning. If this is not done, large bubbles will form.
Please wait until sufficient pressure has built up in the CO2 hose. Alternatively, the CO2 supply can be increased significantly for a short time.
To ensure that the modern ceramic-PE hybrid membrane can produce microbubbles evenly and ensure effective CO2 mixing in the water, it must be soaked in water for approx. 24 hours before commissioning. To do this, do not switch on the CO2 supply for the specified period after installation. Alternatively, the membrane can be placed in a bowl of water. Without soaking, the pores are not supplied with sufficient water and only allow large bubbles to pass through unevenly. Alternatively, the membrane can also be placed in a tray filled with water. Without soaking, the pores are not supplied with sufficient water and only allow large bubbles to pass through unevenly
The size of the CO2 bubbles is crucial for comparability. Therefore, the number of bubbles in ProFlora direct cannot be compared with the old method of bubble detection (e.g., ProFlora Count (safe) or other bubble counters). Depending on the method used, bubble sizes can vary by up to 300%. Therefore, to compare both systems, always use the same bubble counter and determine the conversion factor "bubble count in the old bubble counter" to "bubble count in ProFlora direct." Since there is no CO2 bubble size standard on the market, this confusion can arise
With this CO2 diffuser, CO2 is forced through a fine membrane under pressure. Depending on the counterpressure, this sometimes causes a slight chirping sound. If the sound becomes louder during operation, this indicates that the membrane is dirty or that the working pressure has changed. Please clean the membrane and reduce the working pressure if necessary.
We advise against installing the JBL ProFlora Direct on a bio-CO2 system. The working pressure is not sufficient to achieve a consistent addition of CO2. There is also a risk that the pressure cannot escape through the built-in check valve and damage the reaction vessel if it cannot withstand the pressure.
We recommend a working pressure of 1.0–1.5 bar.
In line with the motto "better safe than sorry," some aquarium owners install several check valves in the same circuit. If you use the JBL PROFLORA direct inline diffuser or the JBL PROFLORA CO2 Count Safe bubble counter, for example, you already have an integrated check valve. If you use a separate check valve (JBL PROFLORA SafeStop) in addition, problems may arise when opening the check valves. This effect can be observed if the addition does not start again automatically after the night shut-off or interruption of the supply with the controller. Please note that, depending on the working pressure and the number of bubbles, it may take a few minutes between the start of the addition and the visible entry of CO2 into the aquarium. Each spring in a check valve requires a certain amount of pressure to open. Multiple springs can therefore interfere with each other and, depending on the distance between the two check valves, reduce the pressure on the spring to such an extent that it remains closed. Therefore, please always use only one check valve for your CO2 installation.
The bubble counter of the JBL PROFLORA® Direct direct diffuser is filled with water as shown in figure B of the instructions for use and screwed onto the body ©. During operation, depending on the amount of CO2 added, the water level in the bubble counter may fluctuate. A high bubble count with high working pressure causes the water to be displaced from the chamber. If the addition stops, water will re-enter the chamber after a delay. If the membrane is dirty, the chamber will remain empty. The membrane must be cleaned as described in the other FAQs.
