The highly porous surface of the bio-sintered glass in ring or ball form (JBL SintoMec or JBL MicroMec) is not only colonized by beneficial filter bacteria, but also becomes clogged with sludge and other residues over time, inhibiting the bacteria's work and, in the worst case, bringing it to a standstill. It is therefore advisable to rinse the material in a bucket of skimmed aquarium water every 4-8 weeks, depending on the degree of contamination. This prevents the filter bacteria from being damaged too badly and removes any coarse dirt. If possible, do not clean the entire filter, but only in sections.
