Water testing in autumn to help combat algae in summer!

Most pond owners unfortunately only test their water when a problem occurs. When the pond turns green in summer (floating algae) or thread algae grow excessively, they follow the recommendation of specialists to test the nutrients that triggered the algae growth. Nitrate and phosphate tests are then used to test whether the two nutrients are present in excess and thus responsible for the algae. Now comes the dilemma: when algae grow en masse, they bind the nutrients nitrate (NO3) and phosphate (PO4) in their cells. The pond owner can therefore have an abundance of algae, yet no or hardly any phosphate and nitrate in the water!

Only when the algae die off as the amount of light decreases in late summer/autumn are the bound nutrients released back into the pond water and can be detected with good water tests such as the JBL PROAQUATEST NO3 Nitrate and  JBL PROAQUATEST PO4 Phosphate koi . After determining the two algae nutrients, the next step is absolutely recommended: bind the released phosphates! With the help of a good phosphate remover like JBL PhosEX Pond Filter , the phosphates should then be removed from the water. Otherwise, the next period of strong sunshine will bring with it the next plague of algae.
