Healthy aquariums with conditions close to nature
The right water values are dependent on the fish stock and plants in the aquarium. Even if the water looks clear it can be contaminated. With poor values diseases or algae can appear in the aquarium. To maintain a healthy aquarium with conditions close to nature it is important to check and adapt the water values regularly. With the JBL Testlab you can determine the 12 most important water values in your aquarium.

Precise measurement of the following values:
pH test: acidity of the water from 3.0 to 10
pH-Test: acidity of the water from 6.0 to 7.6
pH-Test: acidity of the water from 7.4 to 9.0
O2 test: determination of the oxygen content
CO2 test: determination of the carbon dioxide content for thriving plant growth
GH test: determination of the general hardness
KH test: pH stability of the water (carbonate hardness)
PO4 test: determination of the phosphate content (reason for algae growth and plant nutrient)
NH4 / NH3 test: indication of non-toxic ammonium, determination of the toxic ammonia using table
NO2 test: determination of the nitrogen compound nitrite, which is toxic for the fish
NO3 test: determination of the nitrate content (reason for algae growth and plant nutrient)
Fe test: determination of the iron content to monitor the fertilisation
Cu test: deadly heavy metal for invertebrates. Also important for setting the therapeutic dose of medications
SiO2 test: determination of the silicate content (silicic acid) as the cause of algae growth

To determine the CO2 content you just need to measure the pH and KH values. From both values arises the CO2 content in the water, which then can be referenced from the enclosed table.
With our research department and our worldwide expeditions into the habitats of the animals JBL permanently sets new standards with its product innovations.

You can analyse your measured water values in the JBL Online Laboratory free of charge and receive recommendations.

FAQ
Where can I find the record sheets for the documentation of my water analysis?

Have you lost your record sheets, already filled them all in or do you need them in another language?
With the following links you can quickly and easily print out your new record sheets with recommendations for the individual parameters at home and document the water analyses.
deutsch: https://www.jbl.de/?lang=de&mod=files&func=show&id=11164
English: https://www.jbl.de/?lang=en&mod=files&func=show&id=11164
französisch: https://www.jbl.de/?lang=fr&mod=files&func=show&id=11164
niederländisch: https://www.jbl.de/?lang=nl&mod=files&func=show&id=11164

I have lost my colour chart. Can I download the colour chart for the test?

The colour cards are not available for download on the JBL website. The absolutely accurate colour reproduction that is required can only be achieved using a printer which can be re-calibrated before each printout. Most privately used printers are not accurate enough for this.

You will find the colour chart bundle as a spare part on the respective product page and in the spare parts shop under: https://www.jbl.de/en/products/detail/8732/jbl-proaquatest-assortiment-color-chart

Why are there no colour charts for GH. KH, Mg /Ca saltwater and CO2 direct?

The tests from the test range: JBL GH test, JBL KH test, JBL calcium test Ca and JBL magnesium test Mg, where the number of drops are counted until the colour changes and the counted value is multiplied by a value:

GH = number of drops = general hardness in °dH

KH = number of drops = carbonate hardness in °dH

CO2 = number of drops * 2 = CO2 in mg/l

Magnesium + calcium = number of drops * 120 = amount Ca + Mg in mg/l

Calcium = number of drops * 20 = amount Ca in mg/l

Magnesium = amount Ca+Mg from magnesium test - amount Ca in mg/l = magnesium in mg/l

The instructions point out that the comparator block should be used to compare the colours. Can this be done without the comparator block as well ? Or is there a factor from this comparison that is required for the measurement ?

The colour charts are intended to be used with the comparator block. In addition, when the comparator block is used with the blank water sample, this compensates the inherent water colour.

Therefore, if the comparator block is not used, there will most likely be deviations in the readings.

Which scale applies for my aquarium? My test has two or three control fields with fish and recommendations.

We repeatedly receive questions regarding the symbols on the water test. The hobby areas cannot be clearly assigned to the scales for analysis. There are three symbols to make the hobby areas on the colour charts clear:

Discus = fresh water
Emperor = salt water
Koi = garden pond

In the following, you will find a list which assigns the scale for analysing the results from measurements in the hobby area and explains the symbols: The scales are described from the top to the bottom here.

NO3: salt water, fresh water, garden pond
pH 6.0 – 7.6: fresh water, garden ponds
pH 7.4 – 9.0: salt water, fresh water, garden pond
Fe: fresh water, garden pond

The following JBL tests have a uniform scale for all 2 or 3 hobby areas for analysis of the results from the measurements, as differentiation is no longer necessary:

SiO2
Cu
NH4
NO2
PO4
pH 3-10
O2

Getting rid of diatoms - no problem at all

If a brown coating covers the substrate of your aquarium and looks unattractive, let’s hope it is diatoms! The alternative would be smear algae - and they are not as easy to get rid of as diatoms.

How often do you need to test your pond or aquarium water?

Granted, nobody really enjoys testing water. It’s time-consuming and sometimes you’re not sure which colour on the chart your water result matches. But water testing really can be lifesaving – at least for your fish!

Why is the KH higher than the GH?

Many aquarium owners think that the general hardness represents the total of all minerals and the carbonate hardness only a part of it. Then how can the carbonate hardness sometimes be higher than the total of minerals?

Testing Water in the Jungle

Our 15 expeditions have taught us something new: In natural waters nitrogens (ammonium/ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) and phosphates are ALWAYS scarce and below the limit of detection. Only when humans have an influence on the natural water, can nitrogens and phosphates be found.

PUSH messages from JBL

What are PUSH messages? As part of the W3C standard, web notifications define an API for end-user notifications that are sent to the user's desktop and/or mobile devices via the browser. Notifications appear on the end devices as they are familiar to the end user from apps installed on the device (e.g. emails). Notifications appear on the end user’s device, just like an app (e.g. for emails) installed on the device.

These notifications enable a website operator to contact its users whenever they have a browser open - it doesn’t matter whether the user is currently visiting the website or not.

To be able to send web push notifications, all you need is a website with a web push code installed. This allows brands without apps to take advantage of many of the benefits of push notifications (personalised real-time communications at just the right moment).

Web notifications are part of the W3C standard and define an API for end user notifications. A notification makes it possible to inform the user about an event, such as a new blog post, outside the context of a website.

JBL GmbH & Co. KG provides this service free of charge, and it is easy to activate or deactivate.
