Averting algae next year – take action now

You may well have asked yourself this year why algae suddenly appear in spring even though you have barely fed your fish yet. It was still cold and the sun had only just begun to shine a little stronger. The reason for it is last year’s “waste” still lying on the bottom of the pond.

What exactly do we mean by “waste“? In the course of the year the fish excrete plenty of faeces, plant parts die off, pollen and insects fall into the water and in autumn leaves and other plant parts enter during storms. What they all have in common is that they are loaded with plentiful nutrients. These nutrients reach the water and the solid components slowly decay and deposit as so-called “mulm” or sludge. This creates a perfect storage space for the common algae nutrient phosphate.

As soon as the first rays of sunshine of the year appear, algae is able to absorb the nutrients stored there, and this leads to an undesired effect: green water, long green threads or a slimy algae surface. This is unsightly and annoying.

It is therefore important to siphon the sludge on the bottom of the pond and to mechanically remove it from the biosystem pond. In addition the removal can be supported by JBL SediEx Pond . The bacteria and the oxygen contained promote the breakdown of the sludge.

A small „dust layer“ of mud on the bottom of the pond is acceptable (just like in your living room). When it gets thicker it is high time to use the (pond) vacuum cleaner, because (dust) sludge layers several centimetres deep are no longer acceptable. The clear water in the pond will thank you in the coming season if you preventively remove the sludge and keep it at a minimum.
