The respiratory rate and pulse rate increase at a carbon dioxide concentration of 3-5%. Other symptoms are headaches, discomfort and ringing in the ears. Carbon dioxide concentrations of 8-10% and more cause these symptoms to become more pronounced. This may lead to cramps, fainting, apnoea and death from suffocation. One 500 g cylinder contains 500 g CO2. This is equal to 11.36 mol (chemical substance amount unit). One mol of a gaseous substance has a volume of 22.414 l under normal conditions (273.15 K, 101325 Pa), so that 500 g of CO2 result in a volume of 254.7 l. CO2 is heavier than air, so that it collects on the ground. This corresponds to a CO2 height level in the range of 12.735 mm = 1.27 cm for a room of 20 m². If it is mixed completely with the air in a room of 20 m² and a height of 2.5 m (corresponds to 50,000 l), this corresponds to a maximum gas concentration of 0.5 volume %, which is well below the dangerous level.
True to the motto, better safe than sorry, some aquarists install several check valves in the same circuit. For example, if you use the JBL PROFLORA direct inline diffuser or the JBL PROFLORA CO2 Count Safe bubble counter, you already have an integrated check valve. If you also use a separate check valve (JBL PROFLORA SafeStop), there may be problems with the opening of the check valves. This effect can be observed if, after the night switch-off or interruption of the supply with the controller, the addition does not restart automatically. Please note that, depending on the working pressure and the number of bubbles, a few minutes may pass between the start of the supply and the visible entry of CO2 into the aquarium. Each spring in a check valve needs a certain pressure to be opened. Several springs can therefore interfere with each other and, depending on the distance between the two check valves, reduce the pressure at the spring to such an extent that it remains closed. Therefore, please always use only one check valve for your CO2 installation.

When using disposable cylinders, the adjustment knob for the working pressure is also the valve for opening your CO2 cylinder. When using refillable cylinders, you have an additional cylinder valve, open this first. The cylinder pressure now shows you a pressure of approx. 60 bar. This means that the cylinder is sufficiently filled and you can continue with the next steps. Now turn the adjustment knob for the working pressure, the large screw knob between the two pressure gauges, and observe the right-hand pressure gauge for the working pressure. The green range up to 1.2 bar is marked. Open it so far that the desired working pressure is reached. The adjustment of the screw allows the opening up to approx. 1.2 bar. If you are using a solenoid valve, now establish the power supply so that the CO2 can pass. As a last step, open the needle valve to adjust the amount of CO2 (bubble count) and set a bubble count of approximately 10 - 15 bubbles on the bubble counter. After the run-in period of 24 hours, set the number of bubbles required for your aquarium.
Your system is probably still under pressure. Close the cylinder valve and remove the CO2 hose from the pressure regulator fitting. Open the regulating screw and release the pressure still present in the pressure regulator until both pressure gauges show 0 bar. Loosen the connecting nut of the pressure regulator fitting from the cylinder valve.
No, a tool should never be used. The use of a tool can lead to damage. There is a thin spike at the tip of the needle valve. If the needle valve is closed clockwise and turned too tightly or with a tool, it may break off and damage the pressure regulator.
No, a tool is not required and should not be used under any circumstances. The use of a tool can lead to damage. You can mount the pressure reducer on the CO2 cylinder with your hands. Turn only until you feel resistance and then turn about half a turn more. This way the pressure regulator fitting is hand-tight. A short hissing sound will be heard when attaching the fitting to disposable cylinders.
