Varied diet. Abwechslungsreich und ausgewogen.

Water turtles eat pretty much everything in their habitat. The natural food spectrum is therefore very diverse. Ideally, the four foods should be fed alternately and supplemented with fresh aquatic plants and live food or even defrosted shrimps or fish morsels. The higher the water temperature, the more plants get eaten! So if you want to limit plant eating somewhat, you should keep the water temperature at around 24-25 °C. Y

The diet for desert tortoises and Mediterranean species is identical. Dietary fibre is very important as it binds water in the intestine and increases the length of time it remains in the intestine. In principle, tortoises do not touch anything that would be poisonous to them. Some plants and fruits, such as strawberries, are okay if they are fed in moderation. JBL foods always contain a healthy amount of fruit. The main part of the food should consist of herbs (e.g. JBL PROTERRA HERBIL), as the phosphorus/calcium ratio here is a healthy 1:4. Fruit, flowers, etc. are always a welcome addition to the "main" herb food. Forest tortoise species may be given more fruit than desert and steppe tortoises. Dried food such as the four JBL foods can be soaked in water for a little while, as they then develop a stronger flavour and tortoises perceive it much better as food.
