Temperature drop in the terrarium - A problem during the cold season

It’s getting cold inside. It’s time to switch on the heating and snuggle your feet under a blanket on the sofa. And the cold has reached the terrarium too. The lighting you installed might be enough to reach the target temperature in summer, but it might not be sufficient for the winter.

First of all keep the cold out and the heat in by insulating your terrarium floor and walls with styrofoam or insulation mats on the outside. This could be seen as a passive measure.

A recommended active solution would be a self-adhesive infrared heating mat ( JBL TerraTemp HeatMat ) for terrariums, which emits the ideal heat radiation for animals and plants. It’s very simple to attach. A self-adhesive backing allows you to install it to the bottom, sides or cover of the terrarium. A cladding foil means you can even attach it in visible places.

For digging animals we do NOT recommend you attach it to the ground, as the animals would no longer be able to bury themselves in the ground to avoid the heat.

Another alternative for less widespread heating is to install multiple heating stones, which can provide heat throughout the year.

Further information about heat in the terrarium can be found here: Light and heat for the terrarium .
