Fish and shrimps need oxygen to live. Air stones, also called diffusers, transport air from a diaphragm pump (air pump) into the aquarium. The air bubbles out of the air stone through the water to the surface. On their way to the surface, the air bubbles release oxygen into the surrounding aquarium water and move the water surface. The water surface becomes larger due to the movement and can absorb more oxygen from the air. Long air stones have the advantage that they do not clog up so quickly and can provide reliable service for a very long time.
