It is a floating, prebiotic specialised food with a species-appropriate composition comprising 18 per cent spirulina, salmon, prawns and 11 different types of vegetables and fruit. Medaka have a relatively small, upper-facing mouth. The food therefore consists of small, floating flakes of varying sizes, ensuring that even young fish can find suitable food straight away.

Medaka, also known as rice fish or rice carp, are native to large parts of Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam and Laos. They inhabit slow-flowing waters, lakes, marshes and rice paddies – which is where their name comes from. They are extremely adaptable and can tolerate water temperatures between 4 and 36 °C. Their small size of just 3–4 cm makes them ideal for small aquariums or mini-ponds. Their life expectancy is a maximum of four years, although they breed easily and quickly. In the wild, they feed exclusively on small food items such as zooplankton (animal plankton), insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, algae, phytoplankton (plant plankton) and detritus.
