The treatment of white spot disease (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) takes anywhere from 10 to 14 days, depending on the temperature in the warm water aquarium.
The active ingredients do not attack the parasite present on the fish, they attack the so-called swarmer stage instead.
The pathogen leaves the fish after a few days and passes into a so-called bottom stage (at the bottom of the tank or pond), where it multiplies and produces the swarmers that reinfect the fish. The active ingredients act against these swarmers.
That is why it is important to carry out the treatment for a sufficiently long time (even after all the white spots have fallen off the fish).
