Underwater Forests in 30 cm Depth

Aquatic plants and terrarium animal biotopes were on the agenda for the last day. Our friend Paul, who runs an excellent specialist shop for aquariums in Cairns, took us to some places where we found beautiful aquatic plants. The plants were growing in the current of the stream and provided protection to the many existing animals (shrimps and rainbow fish). We were able to identify 4 different aquatic plant species in this particular section of the stream. In a second stream in the rainforest we found some very attractive moss completely immersed next to a Cryptocoryne species. With the exception of one stream, the measurements showed that aquatic plants were only present where iron was measurable. But potassium and magnesium were also needed in sufficient quantities for the plants to grow luxuriantly. By the way, Australian pet shops have big problems sourcing aquatic plants which DON’T originate from Australia. The Australians are afraid of invasive species.
