Aquascaping oznacza technikę kształtowania krajobrazów akwarystycznych. Mogą przy tym powstać pełne fantazji kompozycje roślin, imitacje krajobrazu nad wodą lub naturalnych biotopów. W akwarium Aquascaping nie ma lub jest mało ryb i bezkręgowców. Tym samym zmniejsza się dostarczanie składników pokarmowych dla roślin i ogranicza się ich wzrost. Azot, fosfor i inne składniki mineralne stają się towarami deficytowymi i muszą być celowo dodatkowo podawane jako nawozy. Do zdrowego wzrostu roślin potrzebne jest roślinom światło, CO2 i właściwe składniki pokarmowe.

Wysoce porowata skała wulkaniczna ma różne zadania w akwarium Aquascaping: Po pierwsze zapewnia stabilną podstawą do dalszych konstrukcji z kamienia i/lub korzeni z drewna, które z podłożem przesuwałyby się dalej do dołu a po drugie w porowatej strukturze osiedla się wiele pożytecznych bakterii. Poza tym porowata struktura skały zapewnia dobrą możliwość przenikania składników pokarmowych i dostarcza wiele składników mineralnych, tak że rośliny bardzo dobrze się w niej ukorzeniają i rosną.
